Introducing Valour Consultancy’s brand-new report: The Future of Maritime Cybersecurity – 2025. The first edition of this report offers insights into the evolving cyber threat landscape, while also including an in-depth analysis of the market.
Maritime cybersecurity is a growing concern as expanding bandwidths and rising digitalisation each introduce new vulnerabilities. Unlike other sectors, where cybersecurity has evolved alongside technology, maritime has been behind due to historically limited onboard connectivity. Cyberattacks can disrupt operations, cause financial losses, and damage reputations, while the increasing use of sensitive data heightens risks. Stricter regulations are now pushing operators to strengthen their defences, but achieving compliance is challenging due to the complexity of vessel systems, diverse suppliers, and outdated infrastructure.
According to our report’s author, Alishia Sims:
“One of the most interesting insights from this report’s data is Marlink’s position as the market leader. While this may come as a surprise, the company has established a dominant presence in this space. Marlink utilises its strong position in connectivity, both as a VSAT provider and an MSS reseller, to bundle in cybersecurity services. Additionally, cybersecurity remains a key growth focus for the company. Marlink has expanded its digital impact through acquisitions, including Telemar and OmniAccess, both having a strong presence in the leisure market, a valuable testing bed, as well as more recently cybersecurity companies Diverto and Port-IT.”
The data reveals further compelling trends, particularly the growing adoption of cybersecurity solutions across the maritime industry. Valour Consultancy estimates that in 2024, there were over 55,000 subscriptions to cybersecurity services in the maritime industry. Notably, a single vessel can hold multiple subscriptions.
Fortinet’s direct services rank second in the current market share. Interestingly, both large shipping companies and those in offshore energy are more inclined to use cybersecurity providers outside the maritime sector, extending office-level protection to their vessels.
Across all applications, this adoption is driven by three key factors: increasing regulatory requirements mandating cyber protection, the accelerating pace of digitalisation, and the increasing availability of high bandwidths at sea. As capabilities and attack surfaces expand, so must digital security measures.
