The latest “Scam-o-meter” update from Coveron, an identity theft and scam protection service, reveals that identity theft is rarely a one-and-done problem anymore. Recent data shows a shift toward cascading crises, with more than 25% of victims managing two or more identity incidents simultaneously. Nearly 6% of those seeking help were dealing with four or more separate attacks at once.
Criminals are moving away from simple one-off scams toward multi-layered attacks. For working-age adults, the biggest threat is now unauthorized device access: hackers getting directly into phones or computers to trigger a chain reaction of fraudulent activity across banking, social media, and email accounts.
This pile-on effect makes recovery nearly impossible. The data shows that for victims facing three or more of these attacks, the resolution rate was effectively zero.
To stay ahead of these multi-front attacks, Tomas Sinicki, managing director at Coveron, recommends regularly revoking permissions for apps you don’t use daily. He also suggests using a dedicated, secure email address exclusively for account recovery and proactively freezing your credit files. Finally, he recommends treating any unexpected password reset emails or sudden app logouts as immediate red flags for a coordinated attack.
